Liga Profesional VAR officials to get offside alerts from Genius Sports

Offside calls in Argentina’s Liga Profesional will soon be flagged by cameras. Genius Sports, the sports data supplier, has expanded its existing partnership with the Argentine Football Association (AFA) to install semi-automated offside technology across the Liga Profesional de Fútbol.

The company announced the agreement on 30 October 2026 and gave no financial terms or contract length. The system starts with the Clausura final on 12 December and is due to run fully across the league before Torneo Clausura 2027, which starts in July.

How it works

Computer vision cameras in the stadiums track the players’ positions. Genius Sports’ GeniusIQ platform processes the data in real time, identifies the moment the ball is played and alerts video assistant referee (VAR) operators to possible offside incidents. It also produces 3D visuals of the decision, which go to broadcasters and in-stadium screens after the officiating process.

Why it matters

The deal adds a league-wide officiating product to a relationship between Genius Sports and the AFA that already existed. Broadcasters and in-stadium screens will receive the 3D offside visuals after each decision.

Genius Sports says the technology has cut average offside decision times by more than 30% in competitions including the Premier League, Liga MX, Brasileiro Série A, CONMEBOL and the Belgian Pro League. That figure is the company’s own.

The company also says the same tracking infrastructure can later be used for coaching insights, enhanced broadcasts and fan experiences in Argentina. It names no specific customers for those products.
